Vertical Flame Propagation Test for a Single Insulated Cable

The purpose of the test is to determine the flame resistance of a single cable and to determine the number of falling particles, the degree of black smoke formation and the length of the flame spread as it ascends up the burning piece of cable during the test.



Vertical Flame Propagation Test Device

The test device is designed in accordance with TS EN 60332-1-2 / IEC 60332-1 standards. It creates a flame with a combination of air and propane gas, and applies the flame onto the cable sample for a determined period, according to the cable outer diameter.

Tested Piece

The tested piece of cable is fixed in a vertical position in the middle of the metal screen between the two horizontal support brackets, with (550 ± 5) mm distance between the base of the upper bracket and the top of the lower bracket.

Flow Rate

The propagation initial flame pulse must be produced with 650 mL/min of Propane flow rate and 10L/min of Air flow rate.

Ignition

The duration of flame application is determined by the diameter of the tested piece. In this test, the duration is 60 seconds for a 25mm cable diameter.

With the burner at an angle of 45° ± 2 to the vertical axis of the test piece, the tip of the inner blue flame is positioned to hit the surface of the test piece at 475±5 mm from the lower edge of the upper horizontal support. A single calibrated burner is ignited.

When the test period is over, the burner is immediately withdrawn and closed, and the flame is left to burn out completely. Afterwards, the test piece gets thoroughly wiped and cleaned.

Measurement

If the flame expands upward higher than 50mm from the top brace or downward lower than 540mm from the top brace, a fault is registered. If a fault is registered, two more tests are carried out on new pieces. Finally, If a cable passes two successful tests it is considered to have passed the test.
